My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen
WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY, JANUARY 18-25 | Weekday Masses during the annual week of prayer for Christian Unity makes a good occasion for celebrating the three formulas for the Unity of Christians, under the missal’s Masses for Various Needs and Occasions, #17. |
DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE LEGAL PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN, JANUARY 22 |
The USCCB designates January 22 as a day of prayer for the legal protect of unborn children. The Mass For Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life (Various Needs and Occasions, #48/1A or B) is recommended. The Lectionary for Mass Supplement offers a wide selection of optional readings. |
SUNDAY OF THE WORD, JANUARY 24 | The Vatican has designated the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time as the Sunday of the Word of God. This is an appropriate day to enthrone a lectionary or bible and to offer the blessing of readers at Masses (Book of Blessings, Chapter 61, 1827-1833). |
WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE, FEBRUARY 2 | The Vatican sets February 2 as the World Day for Consecrated Life. The liturgy remains that of the Presentation of the Lord, and this becomes an especially appropriate day to include those in consecrated life serving in worship and to remember them in prayer. |
DAY OF PRAYER AT SEEDTIME, FEBRUARY 4 | The diocesan day of prayer At Seedtime will be on Thursday, February 4. Bishop Johnston will preside for Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at 12:15 p.m. All are welcome to bring seeds for blessing in anticipation of spring planting. Please watch for information that can be placed in parish bulletins for family prayer. Masses on that day in our diocese use the missal’s prayers At Seedtime, #27 from Masses for Various Needs and Occasions. Readings may be taken from the fourth volume of the lectionary, Masses for Various Needs and Occasions, #19 For Productive Land. |
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER AND AWARENESS AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING, FEBRUARY 8. |
The Vatican sets February 8 as The World Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking. Appropriate petitions may be included in the universal prayer. The Mass of Josephine Bakhita, or For the Preservation of Peace and Justice (#30), or For Those Held in Captivity (#43), or In Any Need (#48) among the missal’s formulas for Masses for Various Needs and Occasions may be used. Readings in related areas in volume IV of the lectionary are also permitted. |
WORLD DAY OF THE SICK, FEBRUARY 11 | The Vatican sets February 11 as the World Day of the Sick. This makes an especially appropriate occasion for petitions for the sick, for those who serve them, for administering the anointing of the sick within its ritual Mass, or for using the formula For the Sick (#45) or For the Dying (#46) among the Missal’s Masses for Various Needs and Occasions. |
RITE OF ELECTION, FEBRUARY 20-21 | The Rite of Election will take place at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday, February 20 at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and at the Cathedral of St. Joseph on Sunday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m. Due to pandemic restrictions, participation at diocesan rites of election with Bishop Johnston will be limited to catechumens, godparents, and a few of those preparing and supporting them. This year’s diocesan ceremonies will not include the Call to Continuing Conversion for Candidates, which pastors may celebrate in their own parishes at any time of year. |
